Quiz Bowl Nationals
With its strong finish at the Solon Fall Tournament, the quiz bowl team members from Newbury Junior-Senior High School proved themselves worthy to play on a national stage. On the weekend of April 30, Newbury joined 79 of the top quiz bowl teams from small public high schools at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare for the 2016 Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT) to determine who was the best.
Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.
The team was captained by Mak Sanders, who was joined by Alex Everiss, Jessica Perez, Kevin Piczer, Zac Plesmid and Sarah Stefancin. The team was coached by Taylor Schildhouse.
Newbury entered one of the 17 Ohio teams competing at the national championship.
Newbury finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-4 record, which qualified them for the playoffs. Newbury finished in 25th place.
The 2016 SSNCT field featured 80 teams from 21 states.
