Signatures Transform Gym Floor

The evening of June 19 at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School was a dramatic one. High winds and water damaged parts of the school’s roof, the McGarry Gym and other areas around the campus. Unfortunately, the gym floor, along with the roof, took the brunt of the water damage and the entire main court floor had to be replaced. While the costs will be covered by insurance, the damage caused major challenges for students, faculty and athletics at the opening of a new academic year.

Amidst it all, NDCL Principal Joseph Waler decided to turn everyone’s eyes toward the future. On Aug. 27, new floorboards that will be installed in the gym were brought to the gathering area in the school cafeteria over the four lunch blocks and all NDCL students and staff were invited to take a colored marker and write their name on the reverse side of the wood strips.

“The damage to McGarry Gym has caused huge expenses and major inconveniences, but we’ve decided to transform all of that into a community-building experience for our students and staff,” said Waler.

The colorful autographs won’t be visible once the floor is complete, but everyone will know they put his or her “signature” on their school for years to come.
