He’s done it again.
Apparently, NDCL senior Andrew Demeter is no “flash in the pan.” For the second time in as many years, Demeter was recognized by C-Span as a talented student and filmmaker. This time, he won second place honors for his short documentary, “The Big Decision.”
The film explores the decision faced by all high school students in the United States: Should I attend college? With the rising cost of college, the degree comes with quite a price tag, and for most, it means a loan.
Demeter asks current seniors, college dropouts and professionals: “Why do it?” and “What are the alternatives?” Clearly, these are pertinent questions for young adults as they make decisions for their future in a very competitive society.
The C-Span competition, StudentCam, is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation.
This year, the competition reached a high mark. Nearly 6,000 students from the United States, Virgin It’slands, Taiwan and United Arab Emirates – entered 2,887 films. After a rigorous judging procedure, 150 winners were selected.
Of course there are cash prizes. But, for Demeter and NDCL, a special presentation of the award by C-Span representatives and tours of the C-Span Bus were a highlight.
