Mock Trial Team Advances
After sweeping the regional competition at Cuyahoga County’s Old Courthouse on Feb. 19, NDCL’s Mock Trial team now advances to the Ohio Mock Trial State Competition at the Statehouse in Columbus on March 10-12.
The legal Lions defeated teams from Solon and Brush high schools, winning the best attorney and best witness awards in both trials. Juniors JD Delahunty and Tom Fogarty won the best attorney awards, and senior Machala Comenschek and sophomore Briana Cowman took the awards for best witnesses. Other members of the team include senior Alexandra Edmonds, juniors Chris Jerme and Randy Cumley, sophomore Antonia Mysyk and freshmen Kayla Powell and Hannah Taylor.
Mr. Richard Stuhan, a retired Jones Day attorney who judged the first trial, had high praise for our student litigators.
“I’ve had the privilege of judging the state finals, and these students are every bit as good as any I’ve seen in that competition,” he said in his post-trial commentary.
This year’s mock trial case focused on the use of deadly force by the police — a timely issue in Cleveland and throughout the nation. The fictional case involved an officer who shot a teenager who was dressed in an archer’s costume and carrying what later turned out to be a toy bow and arrow. The teen was on his way to a medieval faire at the time of the incident.
Swimmers Compete at States
After strong performances in the regional meet at Cleveland State, four Lion swimmers competed in this week’s state swim meet at C. J. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Freshman Owen Hanna finished eighth in the state in the 100-yard backstroke. Owen, juniors Nick Elia and Harison Bhanoo, and senior Peter Russ took 12th place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Way to go, Lions.
Hockey Team Wins Baron Cup III
After capturing the Blue North Division Title, the NDCL’s Lion varsity hockey team won the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Baron Cup III Championship for the second consecutive year. After trailing the Bay Rockets 2-1 going into the third period, NDCL’s playmakers stepped up to change momentum and capture the victory at Brooklyn’s John M. Coyne Recreation Center.
As it normally goes with any hard fought hockey game, frustration and emotions ran high in the final game of the tournament on Feb. 14. A penalty in the second gave the Rockets a power play edge and despite several attempts and 27 Rocket saves, only senior captain Grey Wilson was able to score. The Lions lagged as they left the ice after the second period.
“Coach Bilyk did a great job of lighting a fire under us before the third,” said captain Joe Iademarco.
The game demanded a team effort and together they stepped up. Iademarco made his mark with two goals, giving credit to teammates Grey Wilson and Jaret Cipollone for the assists. Junior CJ Natale and sophomore Will Ferrell also scored. With many returners, they look forward another season and Baron Cup tournament.
