Preschool Poetry Recital
On March 2, Notre Dame Elementary School held its annual prekindergarten poetry recital. All children prepared poems for the evening, entertaining a full house with selections from Shel Silverstein, Kenn Nesbitt and many other poets.
The poetry recital is a preschool tradition that dates back to the school’s Montessori days. NDES values this experience as an important step in each child’s educational development.
GCCTM Math Competition
Congratulations to the entire NDES junior high math tournament team. On March 4, four seventh-grade and three eighth-grade teams represented NDES at the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Math (GCCTM) competition. The GCCTM competition promotes enthusiasm for math, challenges students in an energizing setting and celebrates community-wide achievements of the young mathematicians.
All NDES teams were recognized for their exceptional math skills. Medals were awarded to a seventh-grade team and blue and red ribbons awarded to seventh- and eighth-grade teams. An extra special thank you goes to Mrs. Wendi O’Brien for preparing the students for the competition.
Ash Wednesday Mass
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection and sacrifice. On March 1, NDES held a special Ash Wednesday Mass presided by Fr. Adam Zajac from Holy Angels.
As a school community NDES participates in a Lenten Mission Outreach with Mission Mite boxes. All money collected in these boxes will be used for the Missionary Child Association, Religion books for St. Julie School in Africa, Notre Dame Global Missions and the Cleveland Diocesan Mission in El Salvador. Together, NDES is making a difference in the world.
Breaking Barriers
Mrs. Kathleen Stefancin’s fifth-grade ELA students studied the life, obstacles and values demonstrated by Major League Baseball player Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson, an American professional baseball second baseman, became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947, by demonstrating the values of determination, commitment, persistence, integrity, justice, courage, teamwork, citizenship and excellence. Students then wrote an essay demonstrating how they used Jackie Robinson’s values to break their own barriers in life.
NDES Models Medieval Times
Mrs. Renee Williams seventh-grade social studies class is learning about the feudal system and daily village life in England during the Middle Ages. To help visualize the daily life of medieval times, students created a village replica.
