Handling Bullying
NDES students in kindergarten through eighth-grades began their first session of “Bullies to Buddies” last week. The program taught children specific techniques that can be used to respond to bullying.
Through role playing, students were taught various strategies on how to react to name-calling, rumor spreading and minor physical altercations calmly and effectively, instead of with anger and fear. They learned important lessons that they can carry with them throughout life.
Culture Through Literature
Fifth-graders are learning about world cultures and appreciating diversity through their class novel, “Day of the Pelican.” The book’s themes of identifying and overcoming prejudice help the children understand cultural conflicts in Albania and Serbia as they research the history and geography of Kosovo using their iPads and laptops. As they read the book, students will also learn how they gain strength from the foundation of their family.
Foundation Day Oct. 1
Students and faculty joined together with the Sisters of Notre Dame to celebrate the 164th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters in Coesfeld, Germany. Foundation Day, as it is called, is traditionally celebrated on Oct. 1.
NDES celebrated the day and had a special display in the school lobby depicting the SND community’s foundress, as well as other artifacts of the Sisters past and present.
Apple Day Celebration
Preschool students enjoyed their annual Apple Day celebration. Students tasted red, yellow and green apples and voted on their favorites, graphing the results. The high point of the day was a hay wagon ride through the apple orchards located on the Notre Dame campus.
