The Miracle of Monarchs

Kindergarten through fourth-grade students study the miraculous transformation of monarch butterflies in enrichment class taught by Sr. Barbara Soplata. All of the monarch caterpillars were found in the butterfly garden and hay fields located on the NDES campus grounds.

NDES students observe the changes that occur each week as the caterpillars grow into the beautiful monarch. All monarchs will be set free for their long migration to Mexico for the winter.

NDES Brings Outsiders to Life

As a part of the English language arts curriculum, eighth-grade honors English students act as cast members from the novel, “The Outsiders.” While holding a still shot, a narrator provides a backdrop of this significant scene and its importance to the plot of the story. This project allows students to go beyond the book and reinforce critical thinking skills.

Preschool Environmental Scientists

Students in the Notre Dame Elementary Preschool all-day class have begun an experiment in biodegradability that will take the entire school year to complete. Students buried paper, wood, Styrofoam and eggshells in the playground. Throughout the school year, these items will be uncovered to observe if and how these substances are turning back into soil. Students will record their observations in a special journal before burying the items again.
