Grandparents Day Celebration

Grandparents are special. On Oct. 15, students in kindergarten through fourth-grade celebrated Grandparents Day with Mass, bingo and refreshments.

NDES recognizes the importance of family and celebrates with special events throughout the year.

Donuts with Dad

On Oct. 16, NDES students cele-brated their fathers with Donuts with Dad. It is a wonderful tradition organized by the Notre Dame Parent Association.

Art Students on Assignment

Seventh-grade art students took a field trip to the West Side Market and the Glass Bubble Project. The students had an opportunity to apply their photography skills learned in art class by taking photographs of the sights they saw while touring the facilities. The photographs will be framed and auctioned off at the NDES benefit, which will be held on Feb. 20.

STEM Education Project Grant

Notre Dame Elementary School was selected from among 400 applicants from 12 states to receive a $5,000 grant to support the STEM project “Natural Resource Management and Sustainability Practices” through the Dominion K12 Educational Partnership.

Students will research types of wind turbine designs and their related efficiencies. Comparing and contrasting the effectiveness of different blades, students will work in teams within specific parameters to come up with innovative designs.

A formal introduction to wind turbine technology and sensor technology will prepare the students to carry out the project. Students will construct their designs using balsa wood and then test them using sensor technology and recording software. Through data analysis of wind turbine energy output, students will identify the most effective blade design for energy production.

Students will communicate their findings to classmates and the broader community at NDES’s annual Learning Fair in the spring.
