Rotary Donates Dictionaries
The Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club delivered dictionaries to all of the third-graders at Burton Elementary on Dec. 13. Mr. Dvorak and other members of the Rotary handed out the dictionaries and talked to the students about the importance and usefulness of a dictionary
The history of Rotary as a service organization was discussed in relation to its fight against polio. The school thanks the Burton-Middlefield Rotary for its generous donation to the children.
Spreading Holiday Cheer
On Dec. 10, 16 members of junior-senior high school student council traveled down to the Burton Health Care Center to spread Christmas cheer among the residence. The students, between seventh and twelfth-grades, separated into two groups once arriving at the center.
Each group had the opportunity to construct crafts, including Christmas ornaments and doorknob decorations to bring out creativity in the residents. They also played games such as bingo and special card games in order to get each person involved and enjoy their time with the students.
Cookies and desserts were offered for everyone throughout the day. The student council members enjoyed this visit and have high hopes that the residents at the center will have a great Christmas.
Treasurer Receives Auditor of State Award with Distinction
At the December regular meeting of the board of education, Beth McCaffrey received the Auditor of State Award with Distinction from Michele Stys representing the Auditor of State’s Office. The award is given to entities that file an annual CAFR and timely financial reports in accordance with GAAP, as well as receive a “clean” audit report.
The Berkshire School District’s financial audit did not contain findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies or any questioned costs.
Congratulations to Beth McCaffrey and the Berkshire School District.
AC4P Students Come Together
The AC4P (Actively Caring for People) students from Berkshire and Chardon held their first “social” after school at Cleats on Dec. 13. Students from Virginia Tech have been helping both schools promote a caring attitude towards others in both educational communities.
The get-together was paid for in part through a grant from Kinetico. The students shared what they were doing in both schools to promote the AC4P ideals.
Thanks go to Berkshire guidance counselor Michelle Bagaglia and Chardon science teacher Robert Mizen for organizing the event.
