Third-Grade Scientists

During their study of the Earth’s resources, the third-grade class at St. Helen School classified rocks according to their characteristics. The children worked in small groups to observe, describe and research the names of rocks. Guide sheets were used to determine the name of each rock. The children were fascinated that they were able to get their hands on rocks they had never before seen.

The children left the class feeling like scientists and were excited to investigate more materials in the future. They will use the foundation of skills built in third grade to complete S.T.E.M. activities in fourth grade.

The fourth-grade science class recently researched scuba gear through history. This S.T.E.M. activity allowed the fourth-grade “engineers” to design scuba gear of the future and determine the advances that may be made to improve gear.

Beauty Of Icons

Mrs. Esther Dushaw visited St. Helen School to give a special presentation to the junior high students on the beauty of icons. Dushaw is a member of St. George Romanian Catholic Cathedral in Canton. She has studied icons for many years and has painted four of her own.

She brought with her a variety of icons to share with the students. Her inspiring presentation told about how and why icons are made, their purpose in the spiritual lives of the creators, as well as those who venerate them.

CPR Training

Paramedics from University Hospitals visit Mrs. Hotchkiss’s eighth-grade health class to teach students lifesaving skills of adult CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR and relief of choking in an adult, child or infant.

Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment by using the American Heart Association’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible. After successful course completion, each student will receive an official card stating they are certified in CPR.
