WG Brings Home Tournament Win
Over the holiday break, the West Geauga boys basketball team brought home a stunning victory in the highly competitive Hudson Holiday Tournament.
In their first win in a holiday tournament during the last few years, the boys beat two Division I rivals – Kenston in the first round and Hudson in the Championship game – to bring home the victory.
Said head coach Jeff Javorek, “Both games were hard fought and physical. We were able to control the tempo and were able to jump out to aggressive leads. This helped us impose our advantages throughout the game.”
Notable West G performances included Jax Shenkel, a senior guard who was named tournament MVP, Mark Sexton, a senior guard who was named to the All-Tournament Team, and Josh Irwin, a freshman forward who was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
The victories for the Division I wins were WG over Kenston 68-59 and then WG over Hudson 60-52 in the championship.
Javorek is optimistic about the remainder of the season, saying, “We have a strong, skilled team that is led by our seniors and our freshmen control the paint and the glass.”
Lindsey Elementary Winter Concert
The second- and third-graders at Lindsey Elementary School participated in their annual winter concert in December. This year, music teacher Deanna Harrison had a surprise in store for friends and family. Along with voice, the performance incorporated colorful handbells. Not only was it fun for the kids, but it also helped to prepare them for learning to read music.
Harrison said, “Beginning in January, the students will be learning how to play the recorder and how to read music notes on the music staff. The “Merry Christmas Bells” song stretched their music reading by adding more notes. As they begin their learning path with recorders, the students learn to read music notes just like adult musicians.”
Handbell ringers included: Taylor Swaye, Saylor Pitcock, Natalie Pascoe, Jimmy Velliky, James Nicolosi, Nick Kreischer, Isabella Iannetta, Matthew Murton-Hughes, John Lennon, Brady Wierzbicki, Daniel Federico, Emma Hite, London Hall, Jeffrey Remaley, Connor Northup, Roger Steffens, Olivia Geraci and Logan McDaniel.
