Students from the West Geauga Middle School Destination Imagination team competed at the regional competition on March 3 at Barberton Middle School.

Team Daytime Innovations placed first with the highest score in all but one category. The team also won a Renaissance award for its design. The students will be competed at the state competition on March 24.

OMEA Solo, Ensemble Contest

The West Geauga High School Band sent 36 students to participate in the OMEA District VII Solo and Ensemble Contest. The solo and ensemble contest allows students to perform either alone or with a small group of other students and is one of the best ways for students to grow in their performance experience.

Said Jason Branch, West Geauga band director, “This event is an awesome way for students to demonstrate musical independence in performance. Soloists perform alone with a piano accompaniment, and ensembles rely on every part to be played with the utmost accuracy. Each performance represents the student and the school. This event helps students grow as musicians and team members.”

Every event is judged by an OMEA adjudicator, who scores the performance on a five level rating system, ranging from a rating of I – Superior to a rating of V – Very Poor.

The band students performed in a total of 18 events throughout the day, and 12 WG events received the highest rating of I, four events scored a II and one event scored a III.

One student performed an advanced college level solo in the open-class for feedback toward college music auditions.

Alumni Address Students

Four 2017 West Geauga graduates, now current college freshmen, came to the high school as a part of the West Geauga High School speaker series.

Charlie Koach, Annie Foliart, Marin Musser and Emma McCarty gave advice to current junior and senior students on topics ranging from college applications to what to expect when they move to campus in their first year.

Kim Zannetti, school counselor, and Bridget Koenig, counseling intern, organized the event.

K-9 Visits WGMS

Deputy James Dhayer, with the assistance of K-9 officer Miner, conducted a locker search at West Geauga Middle School on March 13.

These visits by local law enforcement are conducted as part of the required drills by the State of Ohio.

The Chesterland Police Department and Geauga County Sheriff’s Office work in cooperation with the schools to ensure the highest level of safety possible at each building.
