STEM Grants Benefit Students

Two different grants have allowed fourth-graders at the West Geauga Schools to access new STEM technology.

The Dash Robots by Wonder Workshop and the iPads to code them were purchased from a $5,000 grant received from the West Geauga Educational Foundation.

The KEVA Planks were purchased by the Westwood and Lindsey PTO from a teacher grant applied for by teacher Heather Howell.

Said Howell, “Many students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade have never experienced anything like this curriculum before. The STEM class is focused on teamwork, problem solving and project-based learning while incorporating technology that will prepare them for their technology-focused future career paths.”

Russell Police are Part of the Family

The Russell Police Department has become part of the Westwood Elementary School family. Russell police officers are present in the building for student arrival and dismissal every day.

Said Chief Carroll, “When the tragedies occurred in Chardon and at Sandy Hook Elementary School, it really made a lasting impact on the department. We simply did what we could to make our schools safer.Since that time, I made it a standing order to have our department present at the school to greet the students and staff in morning arrival and afternoon departure and walk through at different times during the day.The department also has a presence at the school for afterhours activities as well as when requested by the staff.”

Because of their dedication, the officers have gotten many positive comments from parents and staff about their presence. In addition, the officers have enjoyed building relationships with the West Geauga Schools and the community.
