Hillcrest Insurance Athlete of the Year

West Geauga 2018 graduate Jax Shenkel was selected Hillcrest Insurance 2017-18 Athlete of the Year.

Jax received three varsity letters in football and basketball. He was recognized as honorable mention in the Chagrin Valley Conference in football and was voted first team All-CVC in basketball.

Coach Jeff Javorek said, “Jax was one of our leaders on and off the court and did it all by setting an example. He stands for everything it means to be a West Geauga athlete. He is the type of kid that you hope your own kids grow up to be like.”

Jax will be attending Ohio State University to study business in the fall.

Chesterland Rotary Distributes Books

The Chesterland Rotary partnered with Westwood Elementary School to distribute books to the students to prepare for summer reading.

Westwood Principal Deborah Nanney said, “This is the first year we have partnered with the Rotary for this activity. The Rotary also included the public library, which handed out information about their summer reading program as well as allowed students to sign up for a special student library card.”

The event was such a success that Westwood and the Chesterland Rotary are planning more ways they can support literacy next year.

Softball Finishes Successful Season

The 2018 West Geauga varsity softball team had a successful season with 12 wins and six losses overall and 10 wins and four losses in CVC league play. The team won third place and made the sectional finals.

The team was led by four seniors, including Carla Cavasinni at outfield and first team All CVC; Kayla Lorenzo at catcher and first team All CVC; Samantha Ange at third base and second team All CVC; and Amy Sparent at second base and honorable mention All CVC.

Bob Leppla, head varsity softball coach, commented, “We will miss our seniors, but we will bring back a strong nucleus for next season led by senior to-be Mia Minello, who was a second team pitcher, All CVC, as well as senior to-be Brigette Sexton (shortstop, honorable mention, All CVC), senior to-be Maddy Ciminello (outfield) and junior to-be Torrie Gall (first team, All CVC, first base DH). We have a strong nucleus of underclassmen and some freshmen who are very talented.”
