WG Band Rates Superior

The West Geauga Symphonic Band competed at the OMEA Northeast Region State Band Adjudicated Event State Contest on May 2. The group performed three pieces of music at North Royalton High School for a panel of three adjudicators.

The adjudicators listen to all contest selections, provide constructive feedback in written comments and give the band an overall rating based on its performance. After it performs on stage, the band goes to a separate room to sight read a piece of music for a different adjudicator. The band is handed a piece of music it has never seen or played before, and the students have four minutes to study the piece of music.

After their four minutes end, the director discusses the piece with them, going over performance strategies, notes/rhythms, musical elements. While this process is occurring, students are not allowed to play their instruments. After the four-minute study period and four-minute discussion, the band must play the piece from beginning to end and receive a rating from the sight-reading judge based on its performance.

The rating system for the event is I -II III IV V, with “I” being an outstanding performance and “V” being a very poor performance. The WG Symphonic Band received an overall rating of “I” at this event. This is the highest rating a performing group can receive at an OMEA District Contest.

Congratulations to the West Geauga Symphonic Band for achieving this overall rating three years in a row.
