WG Welcomes New AD
West Geauga High School welcomes Joe Leonette as the new athletic director.
Leonette completed his undergraduate work in accounting and sports management at Notre Dame College, where he also served as the student athletic manager for the athletic department. He was an athletic director intern at Chagrin Falls High School and will complete his master’s degree in athletic administra-tion through The Ohio University in the fall of 2016. Leonette also served for one year as athletic director for Berkshire Local Schools.
His passion for baseball led him to coach varsity baseball at Beachwood High School. He is a 2008 graduate of West Geauga, where he lettered for baseball all four years.
“I want to bring back the energy to the athletic programs and make West Geauga great again,” Leonette said. “I’m excited to be back at West G and part of the Wolverine family again.”
His plans include bringing in some professional coaches and keynote speakers to encourage and motivate all student athletes to do their best.
Changes in WG Central Office
Recent visitors to the West Geauga Board of Education Office have noticed some changes. The large interior space that was segmented by portable work station partitions for years has been converted to a large meeting room with the removal of the old partitions. Selected permanent interior walls have been painted in the classic West G dark blue to accent the original curves of the building’s innovative design.
The large open area will soon be used as a community room that will host meetings of the Board of Education. Currently, the Board of Education holds its public meetings in a smaller meeting room in West Geauga Middle School.
According to Superintendent Rich Markwardt, “the changes are being undertaken to make the Board Office more inviting to our district’s residents and parents. We are proud of our students, our staff, and our schools. It is appropriate that we have a community meeting room of which we are also proud.”
The board is planning an open house sometime in September to present the newly redecorated board community meeting room to the public.
BOE Participates in ChesterFest
West Geauga Board of Education President Dan Thoreson and board member Thomas Phelps took turns in the dunk tank as did school Superintendent Rich Markwardt at the recent community celebration. Students and adults took turns hurling tennis balls at the target in an attempt to dunk their board members and new superintendent. Fortunately, it was a warm day, so the cool water felt good according to the participants.
