Girl Scouts Host Veterans Day Event
Local Girl Scout Troop 70592 from West Geauga High School planned and hosted a Veterans Day event. The day began with a flag raising ceremony outside of the high school. A local VFW performed the ceremony. The West Geauga pep band, led by senior Tucker Harvey, performed the national anthem. Following the ceremony, the veterans spoke with students in history classes and advisory periods.
Senior members Regina Ziccardi, Rachyl Anderson, Ashley Armstrong, Angela Warholic, Emily Modliszewski, Ari Ljubi and Chloe Martin wanted to make their last service project a memorable one. Senior Melissa Kuchta, a Scout in another troop, assisted with project.
Last week, prior to the band concert, a military poster was unveiled in honor of West Geauga alumni who served in the armed forces. The poster depicts over 250 graduates of West G and is on display in the main lobby of the high school.
Mealtime Conversations
Every Moment Counts is a mental health promotion initiative developed by school based occupational therapists from the Greater Cleveland area and through direction of Cleveland State University. The Office of Exceptional Children and Ohio Department of Educations’ goal is to help all children and youth have healthy minds in order to succeed in school, at home and in the community.
The Comfortable Cafeteria program is one of several model programs developed as part of the ODE funded Every Moment Counts: Promoting Mental Health Throughout the Day. The six-week program was developed by occupational therapists to be embedded during lunchtime with the purpose of creating a positive cafeteria environment so that all students can enjoy their meal and socialize with friends.
The ultimate goal of the six-week program is to provide the cafeteria staff and students with the necessary knowledge, skills and resources needed to sustain a comfortable cafeteria environment.
Molympics 2015
West Geauga High School students, along with other high school students from around the United States, competed in the Molympics. Chemistry teacher Kristin Gregory explained that the event is held “to learn about Avogadro’s number (one mole) and its importance in chemistry.” The mole is a counting unit in chemistry and represents the number of atoms in 12.0115 grams of carbon.
Students honed their skills at estimation, measurement, dimensional analysis and problem solving by competing in the Tally Mark Challenge, Sponge Squeeze, Mole of Metals, Stopper Tower and Avogadro Fitness Challenge events. At stake were bragging rights and a trophy that will travel to the winning school each year.
West Geauga High School, led by Gregory, came in fifth place overall. In the Stopper Tower event, WG’s team of Marissa Barbieri, Nick Heim, Jennifer Humanchuk, Benny Johnson and Connor Winter placed third and the team of Drew Heatwole, Austin Maguire, David Sprenger and Andrew Velotta placed fourth. West Geauga teams placed in the top 10 in the Avogadro Fitness Challenge, Mole of Metals and Tally Mark events.
The Molympics competition, now in its third year, is held every Oct. 23 and is a collaboration between five high school chemistry teachers who meet and plan the event via Twitter.
“We used Google apps for edu-cation to organize and run the event and to spread the word to participants worldwide,” said Gregory. “Based on the success of this year’s event, 2016 Molympics should be just as suc-cessful.”
