Jump Rope for Heart

Students at Lindsey Elementary School jump into physical fitness to raise money for the American Heart Association. Jump Rope for Heart teaches students how to be a “Heart Hero” through physical activity and volunteering.

“Children can considerably reduce the onset of heart disease by being physically active in their daily routines,” said Valerie Smith, American Heart Association representative.

The American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart funds research and educational programs for youth.

WGMS All-Star Kid

Kevin Watts, an eighth-grade WGMS student, is the March recipient of the Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Kids program. Back in November, his teacher Dawn Jerele nominated him after an inspiring presentation for his community service project in health class.

“For his community service project, Watts volunteered many hours to raise awareness and money for the Crohn’s/Colitis Foundation. His positive attitude, enduring spirit and solid academic record are what make Kevin such an amazing kid and deserving of this award,” said Jerele.

The All-Star Kids program presented by The University of Akron recognizes students who are setting a positive example for their peers. The Cavaliers select one student each month of the season as the All-Star Kids winner.

A surprise visit by Cavaliers mascot Moondog and “Hype Man” Ahmaad Crump presented Watts with a super-sized ticket to a Cavaliers home game and a catered party for his entire class.

Elementary Geography Bees

Fifteen students in fourth through eighth-grades from both Lindsey and Westwood elementary schools competed in the school level National Geographic Bee. Each finalist answers three questions and the student that answers the most correct out of the three questions is the winner.

Lindsey Elementary had three finalists: Emily Berdis, Sam Patterson and Gareth Reeves. In the finals round, Sam Patterson answered two out of three questions correctly, making him the winner.

Westwood Elementary had two finalists: Sebastian Henry and Nicholas Res. In the finals round, Nicholas Res won by answering the question, “Name British Columbia’s largest city that hosted the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship game,” correctly with the answer, Vancouver.
