Franklin B. Walter Award
Congratulations to West Geauga High School senior Drew Heatwole for being the recipient of the Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Award.

A senior from each county within the state of Ohio receives the award annually. The scholarship award is named in honor of Franklin B. Walter who served as State Superintendent of Education for Ohio from March 1977 until August 1991. Throughout his career, Dr. Walter has exemplified concern for young people and has dedicated his life to the improvement of education in Ohio.
Kickstart College Fair
West Geauga High School held its third annual Kickstart College Fair. The fair was open to students in grades 8-12 from the West Geauga community and surrounding communities. With over 70 colleges and universities on campus, the fair provided an excellent opportunity for students to speak with admissions counselors about their next phase of education. Jim Tressel was the guest speaker for the evening.
Former 1987 alumnus Jim Troha represented Juanita College, saying, “It’s great to be back at West Geauga High School for the OACAC College Fair.”
The West Geauga Educational Foundation and OACAC sponsored the well-attended event. The event was very successful and provided a wonderful opportunity for the students.
Weather Day at Progressive Field
The fourth-grade students at Lindsey and Westwood elementary schools recently participated in Weather Education Day at Progressive Field.
Sponsored by the Northeast Regional Sewer District, Weather Education Day brings thousands of students, teachers and parents together to participate in a pregame weather education program presented by WKYC’s Weather Team.
The WKYC Weather Team consisted of Betsy Kling, Holly Giangreco and Greg Dee. Some of the topics discussed in the one-hour program included wind, pressure systems, extreme weather, temperature and the water cycle. The team used demonstrations and explanations to show how weather affects the game of baseball.
Each student received a Weather Education Day workbook that is packed full of useful weather information and activities. Following the program, the students enjoyed the game against the Seattle Mariners.
WGMS Presents ‘Legally Blonde Jr.’
West Geauga Middle School students will have Chester Township thinking pink when they present Music Theatre International (MTI)’s production of “Legally Blonde Jr.” beginning May 14. The fun and upbeat musical follows the adventures of a sorority girl named Elle Woods a Gemini with a double Capricorn moon who tries to win her ex-boyfriend back by earning a Harvard law degree.
“‘Legally Blonde Jr.’ may be a comedic, light-hearted show, but it also explores serious themes of self-discovery and independence which resonate with people of all ages,” says Freddie Gershon, CEO of MTI. “We hope everyone in Chesterland is totally psyched to see the show.”
Delta Nu sorority president Elle Woods seems to have it all: good looks, a relationship with the “campus catch,” and great taste in clothes. However, her life is turned upside-down when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her in an attempt to start getting “serious” about his future and attend Harvard Law. Determined to win him back, Elle uses a lot of hard work and some charm to get into Harvard Law so she can prove to Warner that she’s serious enough for him. Once at school, she is challenged by her peers, professors and her ex, but with the help of some new friends, Elle realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.
With a book by Heather Hach, music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, “Legally Blonde Jr.” is based on the book by Amanda Brown and the hit Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon, which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy. “Legally Blonde The Musical” opened at Broadway’s Palace Theatre in April 2007, starring Laura Bell Bundy as the iconic Elle Woods.
Performances will be on May 14 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and May 15 at 3 p.m. in the middle school gym at 8611 Cedar Road. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the event.
