Writing Recognition Earned
Berkshire would like to proudly congratulate Anna Carlson and Karsten Bergmeier on their outstanding writing submissions to the Geauga Park District’s 18th annual Nature Writing Contest.
Anna’s piece, a poem titled “Tamen Pulchia Est” (Yet it is Beautiful), exquisitely reveals the true beauty that is found in nature’s savagery. Anna placed first in the Adolescent Poetry category.
Karsten’s thrilling short story about a boy and his father who discover their woods have been overtaken surprises readers and leaves an audience thinking. Karsten’s piece placed second in the Adolescent Prose category.
Congratulations, Anna and Karsten.
Conservation Poster Contest Winners Named
The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) proclaimed April 28 to May 5 as National Stewardship Week. In celebration of Stewardship Week, Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored a poster contest. Corresponding with stewardship week, the poster contest theme was “Where Does Your Water Shed?” The purpose of the contest is to instill in youth a connection to the watershed and the need to protect and manage precious water resources.
All students from public, private and home schools were encouraged to enter. The Geauga SWCD presented a check for $30 for first place and $20 for second place in each category. Categories were by grade and were as follows: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.
It was a difficult decision to decide the winners of this year’s contest, but decisions were made and are as follows:
Intermediate School; Grades 7-9: first place Kayla Martin of St. Helen’s High School and second place Amber Bowman of Berkshire High School; Grades 10-12: first place Chase Rowell and second place Gabriel Wilson, both of Berkshire High School.
The first-place winners of each category moved on to the area competition where they have a chance to move on to the state and then national competition. Congratulations go to all the contestants and good luck to the first place winners as they advance through the competition.
