Nature Fun For Seniors
Summertime offerings for seniors include bike rides, naturalist-led hikes and Elderberries experiences.
Seniors who enjoy a good bike ride may bring their bicycles to the Park Avenue trailhead parking area behind Marc’s in Chardon, with a helmet and water, and join escorted rides this summer along The Maple Highlands Trail. No registration is required. Geauga Cyclists head out at 3 p.m. every Wednesday through October for roughly an hour and a half. To receive notice when rides are cancelled, call Sandy McLeod at 440-279-2137 to be added to her cancellation call list.
Register to join a naturalist in a variety of parks throughout the season. Geauga Walkers hikes within Geauga Park District are scheduled from 1-2:30 p.m.: July 12 at Whitlam Woods, July 26 at Russell Uplands Preserve, Aug. 9 at Claridon Woodlands, Aug. 23 at Chickagami Park, Sept. 6 at Welton’s Gorge and Sept. 20 at Frohring Meadows. For a complete schedule, including walks outside of the parks, call the senior center at 440-279-2167.
Register to attend one or more Elderberries programs – all complete with free food courtesy of the Geauga County Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Programs include:
Paddling & Peddling in the Park on July 21, from 9 a.m. to noon at Headwaters Park’s Boathouse; Elderberries at Camp on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at Chickagami Park; and Astronomy Night on Sept. 15 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Observatory Park’s main campus.
