May 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Get an up-close look at the vehicles and equipment of Geauga Park District at The West Woods. The tractors, trucks of all sorts and construction equipment that are used to keep the parks in tip-top shape will be parked for hands-on discovery for kids of all ages. Shuttles run from overflow parking at ASM International.

Night Sky Over Nassau

Discover the special Nassau Astronomical Station with members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society to take in the wonders of Observatory Park’s internationally recognized dark skies using the park district’s restored telescope – the largest publicly accessible research-grade scope in the state.

Saturday sessions are scheduled the evenings of May 20 from 8-11 p.m. and June 17 from 9-11 p.m. No sign-up is needed to attend; just be sure to check the website and social media before making the drive in case it is cancelled by the weather.

Nassau Astronomical Station is accessed by a separate entrance to Observatory Park at 10350 Clay St. in Montville Township.

Journaling The Great Outdoors

Nature lovers will learn basic journaling techniques and how to record their nature observations by attending the park district’s monthly Nature Journaling series hosted by naturalist Renell Roebuck.

Next up in the series are sessions that draw their inspiration from migrating warblers at The Rookery on May 14 from 3-5:30 p.m., and from pond and stream fishes at Swine Creek Reservation on June 18 from 2:30-5:30 p.m.

Registration is required by phone. A one-time fee of $20 for Geauga County residents, or $24 for out-of-county residents, covers the purchase of a journal, pen and pencil for use during the lessons and beyond.

Those who’ve already registered within the calendar year attend for free. And those who’ve attended the series before, but not within the calendar year, pay $10 if a county resident or $12 if living out-of-county, which covers additional instruction and supplies.

Beginners are always welcome. Feel free to call Renell ahead of time with questions at 440-226-2894.
