New 436 Area Code Goes into Effect March 1

After March 1, new phone subscribers in Geauga County will be given a 436 area code after the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio recently approved a plan to overlay the new code over the existing 440 area code.
“The 440 area code is expected to run out of available phone numbers in the third quarter of 2024,” according to the PUCO. “All current 440 area code subscribers will continue to maintain their current number and area code.”
On Jan. 6, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator announced the new 436 area code number, which will serve the same geographic area currently served by the existing 440 area code, which is set to “exhaust” by the end of the year.
“An area code reaches exhaust when nearly all of the telephone prefixes (or NXX codes) within that area code are assigned,” according to the PUCO. “NXX codes are the first three digits of a phone number that follow the area code. There are 792 possible NXX prefixes in each area code, each consisting of 10,000 numbers.”
