GGP Names Dr. Heng Wang as Distinguished Award Recipient

Geauga Growth Partnership has named Dr. Heng Wang, medical director of the DDC Clinic in Middlefield, as the 2026 recipient of the Frank Samuel Distinguished Service Award, the organization’s highest honor recognizing exceptional leadership, community service and lasting impact.

“The Frank Samuel Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who combine extraordinary professional achievement with deep community commitment,” said GGP President and CEO Kimm Leininger in a press release. “Dr. Wang’s lifelong dedication to children, families and scientific advancement — paired with his lasting impact on Geauga County — makes him an exceptional and deserving honoree.”

A board-certified pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Wang has served as medical director for the DDC Clinic since its founding in 2002. Under his leadership, the clinic has gained international recognition for its groundbreaking work and care for children and families affected by rare genetic disorders, GGP said in the release.

Born and raised in China, Wang became one of the country’s youngest physicians after graduating from Anhui Medical University at age 20. He later earned a doctorate in biochemistry from University of Liège in Belgium, followed by  advanced research credentials and clinical training in the United States, including postdoctoral work at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and a pediatric residency at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, in Little Rock, Ark., according to the release.

Since joining DDC Clinic, Wang has served more than 1,100 patient families and contributed to the identification of numerous novel genetic conditions, including ganglioside GM3 synthase deficiency, TMCO1 defect syndrome and SAMS association, GGP said in the release, adding Wang has co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications in journals, including Science, Nature Genetics, PNAS and Cell.

His work has been featured by national and international media outlets, such as The New York Times, CBS 60 Minutes, National Public Radio and The Associated Press, the release said. His honors include the American Academy of Pediatrics Special Achievement Award, the Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care Crystal Award, and multiple regional awards recognizing excellence in medicine and community service.

Wang also serves as a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic, mentoring future healthcare professionals in Northeast Ohio.

Established to honor individuals whose leadership and service strengthen the economic vitality and quality of life in Geauga County, the Frank Samuel Distinguished Service Award will be formally presented to Wang at GGP’s 2026 Annual Business Meeting.
