Congratulations

Munsonite Anika Prots, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School student, was one of 14 high school students honored by the Better Business Bureau of Cleveland’s Students of Integrity Awards program. The Students of Integrity is an essay-based competition, which honors high school students from the BBB’s five-county service area who personify ethics through leadership, community service and actions.

Good News Club

The Good News Club, a free after-school club, meets weekly through March on school days from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 12686 Bass Lake Road, Munson. Adults walk with students from Munson Elementary School and teachers are trained and screened. Parents are welcome to join the club

At the Rookery

The Geauga Walkers will meet at 1 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Geauga Park District’s Rookery on Cedar and Rockhaven roads in Munson. A GPD naturalist will accompany the walk.

If inclement weather, or temperature is 20 degrees or less, the walk will be canceled. For more information, call Jay Saleck at 440-286-2072.

NDES Open House

Notre Dame Elementary School, 13000 Auburn Road, Munson, will hold an open house Jan. 27, from noon to 2:30 p.m., for prospective and current students in preschool through grade 8.

Food Addicts in Recovery

The next meeting of Food Addicts in Recovery will be Jan. 23 from 6:30-8 p.m. at St. Luke Episcopal Church 11519 Wilson Mills Road, Munson. Food Addicts in Recovery offers support, nutrition information and encouragement to those who are making an effort to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

For anyone seeking to lose weight, this may be an ideal time to start. Meetings are free and registration is not necessary.

Geauga Family First Council

The Geauga Family First Council will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 28 (date change from Jan. 21 due to legal holiday) at Geauga County Job & Family Services, 12480 Ravenwood Drive, Munson. The purpose of the monthly meetings is to offer support, understanding and help with family problems as offered by various Geauga County agencies.

Meetings are open to the public. Pre-registration is not necessary.

Free Youth Support Group

Starting in February, WomenSafe, Inc, based in Munson, offers an 8-week free support group to boys and girls, 7-14 years, who have witnessed domestic emotional, physical, sexual and/or financial abuse.

Phyllis Henschel, WomenSafe Inc facilitator and counselor, advises that it is natural for young adults to feel uncomfortable about attending a workshop, but after a few sessions they find they are not alone.

Dates and times of the meetings will be determined by those who register.

Reminder

Applications for Munson Township scholarships to be awarded in May are due no later than 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Munson Township offices, 12210 Auburn Road.

At the Senior Center

Dr. Wieland and Dr. Ritz, podiatrists, will be at the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Munson on Jan. 23 and 24, respectively, to help seniors with their aching feet. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 440-279-2137.

Representatives from the Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services will be at the Chardon Senior Center at 12:45 p.m. Jan. 28 to offer ways that will help lift winter spirits.

The center will be closed Jan. 21 in observance of the holiday.

Historic Tidbits

Funny, sad and interesting tidbits about our presidents, past and present, have not been widely publicized. A few are: John Tyler had 15 children, the last one born after he turned 70; John F. Kennedy’s left leg was almost an inch shorter than his right leg; Bill Clinton, too chubby and too slow to get away when he was 8 years old, was attacked by a sheep; Barack Obama collected “Spider Man” and “Conan the Barbarian” comic books.
