Leadership Geauga
Dr. Bob Faehnle, executive director of Leadership Geauga, invites area residents who are interested in leadership development to apply for the 10-month program, which begins in September and ends in June. Each year, since 1995, approximately 35 people are selected to participate in learning about county government, services, business, education and more in Geauga County.

Food Addicts in Recovery
The next meeting of Food Addicts in Recovery (FAIR) will be Aug. 14, from 6:30-8 p.m., at St. Luke Episcopal Church, 11519 Wilson Mills Road in Munson. The free weekly meetings offer support, nutrition information and encouragement to those who are making an effort to lose weight and remain healthy.

At the Senior Center
A party and free concert to celebrate the grand opening of the new gardens will be held Aug. 15, from 5-8 p.m., at the Gardens of the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive, Munson.
Bring a picnic. Food will be available for purchase. The Four Kings will provide music with the Motown sound. There will be a ribbon cutting, putting contest, cornhole, hula-hoops and more.

With the Arts
A reception to meet the Corrigan family of artists, John, Mark and Rebecca, and view their nature inspired works of art, will be held Aug. 17, from 2-4 p.m., at the Geauga Park District’s West Woods Nature Center. Refreshments will be served. The artwork is on display through Oct. 21.

Concert in the Park
The final Concert in the Park of the year, hosted by the Munson Park & Recreation Board, will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 17, featuring the Dan Zola Orchestra. The free concert will held rain or shine at Munson’s Scenic River Retreat on Mayfield Road.
Bring lawn chairs and dress for the weather. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Proceeds benefit the events coordinated by the Munson Park & Recreation Board throughout the year.
NDCL Athletic Hall of Fame
Reservations are being accepted for the 54th annual Cathedral Latin and 11th annual Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which takes place at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 in NDCL’s McGarry Gym, 13100 Auburn Road, Munson.
Space is limited; deadline to register is Sept. 6. Tickets are $30 each for adults and $15 each for students ages 6-18. Reservations can be made by visiting visit www.ndcl.org or by calling Liz Maier at 440-279-1079.
Historic Tidbit
On Aug. 10, 1945, Japan offered to surrender to the Allies. The formal surrender, with Japan accepting the terms, took place on Aug. 14, 1945. The first American troops landed in Japan on Aug. 28, 1945.
From Dec. 7, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to Dec. 31, 1946, the U.S. Army reported 12,300,000 men and women served in our armed forces (on the Pacific front and the European front) with 1,081,896 casualties, which includes 320,000 dead.
Fly the beautiful U.S. flag on Aug. 14 and give silent thanks to all who have served and continue to serve in the military.
