Commitment to Music
This summer Newbury Local Schools hired a new vocal/choir teacher, Justin Caithaml, to teach grades K-12.
He recently submitted a proposal to the OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) to present at its 2015 OMEA Professional Development Conference in Cleveland in February.
The Ohio Music Education Association is the third largest of the 52 federated state affiliates of NAME, the National Association for Music Education. OMEA members are involved at all levels of music education, serving more than 1.8 million public school students in 612 public school districts and 51 colleges and universities in Ohio. The mission of OMEA is to foster a spirit of collaboration for the mutual benefit of all aspects of music education.
More than 300 proposals were submitted representing many diverse topics, and Justin was recently informed that his proposal was selected to be presented. His topic is Start With Why: Crafting Your Advocacy Message.
Using Simon Sinek’s book “Start With Why” as inspiration, Justin is creating an interactive session in order to seek to find the heart of advocacy efforts. His overall goal is to create a mindset based for participants to understand that “People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.”
He wishes to apply this mindset to music advocacy efforts. Instead of harping on what is taught and how it is taught, he will lead others to focus on why music should be taught.
Justin recently attended the OMEA District 7 fall meeting where he is networking with other teachers in the area and talking about upcoming events and great musicians present in Newbury. The school district is excited to have someone so committed to music education.
