After Prom Walk-Through

Newbury After Prom committee invites residents to a community walk-through on May 1 from 6-9 p.m. to view the transformation of the high school’s gym into this year’s After Prom event, which is themed “A Knight around the World.”

The committee thanks all supporters, donators and parent workers who have come together to make the event happen.

Quiz Bowl Nationals

With its championship win at the LaBrae Invitational, the quiz bowl team from Newbury Junior-Senior High School proved itself worthy to play on a national stage. On April 25, the team will represent its school in a national competition testing their knowledge of history, science, literature, fine arts, geography, the social sciences, current events and more areas of study: National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ Small School National Championship Tournament.

Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions that range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and also include a certain amount of current events, sports and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.

The SSNCT is the only quiz bowl national championship pitting small schools against each other. Non-selective public schools with enrollments 500 or fewer in their top three grades are eligible to compete. This year’s competition will feature 60 teams.

The team will consist of Sam Barnhart, Alex Everiss, Zac Grubbs, Jessica Perez, Kevin Piczer, Zac Plesmid and Mak Sanders. The team will be coached by Taylor Schildhouse.

Tournament results will be updated throughout the two days of competition.
