Be An Educated Hunter
Oct. 9 and 16, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Geauga Park District’s Ranger Department is offering an Ohio Hunter Education course at Big Creek Park’s Donald W. Meyer Center. Coursework will be for first-time hunters who want to acquire a hunting license, covering a range of topics from conservation, safety and ethics to the proper handling of firearms, bowhunting gear
Registration is required on the Ohio Division of Natural Resources’ website.
Students must attend both days and pass a 100-question multiple choice exam by a score of 75 percent or higher in order to obtain certification toward a hunting license after the course. All under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Lunchtime Yoga In The Park
Oct. 14, 21 and 28, 12-1 p.m.
Registration is now open for Lunchtime Yoga in the Park with Darlene Kelbach from Fairmount Center for the Arts at The West Woods in Russell Township.
Register in advance to pay the weekly fee of $7 for Geauga County residents and $10 for out-of-county residents. Participants should be age 10 or older, dressed comfortably with a yoga mat and water bottle in tow.
Park Closures
The 2021-22 Controlled Hunting Program affects three parks this fall and winter.
Observatory Park will be closed from sunrise to noon Oct. 16 and 17 due to youth squirrel hunting, as well as all day Jan. 8 and 10, due to muzzleloader hunting.
The Rookery will be closed Nov. 20, 21, 29 and 30 due to youth and regular gun hunting and The West Woods will be closed Dec. 1 and 2 due to regular gun hunting.
All the dates are also posted on the park district website and rangers and/or signs will be posted at the park entrance on the days as a reminder.
Autumn Scout Days
Explore Geauga parks to earn Scouting credit.
On Oct. 16 at The West Woods Nature Center, Wolf Cub Scouts will work on requirements 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Paws on the Path Adventure with an indoor introduction and a nature hike from 9:30-11 a.m. Then, from 12:30-2 p.m., Junior Girl Scouts will join a naturalist to earn their Animal Habitats badge.
Then, on Nov. 6 at Big Creek Park, Meyer Center, Daisy Girl Scouts will join a naturalist from 10-11:15 a.m. to work on their Eco Learner badge with an indoor introduction and a nature hike. Tiger Cub Scouts will take a short hike from 12:30-1:45 p.m. to learn about plants, animals and safely exploring the outdoors for My Tiger Jungle badge.
All people attending, including adults, must register in advance.
