Spider Saturday

Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Naturalist Nora “the Explorer” Sindelar will lead three different spider-themed programs at The West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., youth ages 10 and older can join arachnologist and author Dr. Sarah J. Rose during Spectacular Spiders to learn about the wonderful world of spiders. A limited supply of Spiders of North America field guides will also be available to purchase, and the presenter will be available for a book-signing after the program.

From 1-2 p.m., Eight-Legged Fun will offer an hour of all-ages discovery featuring spider books with Geauga County Public Library, a spider craft, a spider-themed indoor scavenger hunt and time observing live examples of some spiders found in Geauga County.

Then, from 2-3:30 p.m., Dr. Rose will return, alongside Naturalist Nora, to guide a Spider Search and Exploration Hike through forest and field in search of spiders, webs and more.

Registration is required attend Spectacular Spiders and the Spider Search and Exploration Hike.

Nature Fun For Seniors

Seniors who enjoy a good bike ride may bring their bicycles with a helmet and water to the Park Avenue trailhead parking area behind Marc’s in Chardon and join escorted rides along The Maple Highlands Trail. No registration is required. Geauga Cyclists head out at 3 p.m. every Wednesday through the end of October for roughly an hour and a half. To receive notice when rides are cancelled, call Sandy McLeod at 440-279-2137 to be added to her cancellation call list.

Register to join a naturalist in a variety of parks throughout the season. Geauga Walkershikes within Geauga Park District are scheduled from 1-2:30 p.m.: Oct. 4 at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve, Oct. 18 at Orchard Hills Park, Nov. 1 at Beartown Lakes Reservation, Nov. 15 at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve, Nov. 29 at Big Creek Park, Dec. 13 at The West Woods and Dec. 27 at Eldon Russell Park. For a complete schedule, including walks outside of the parks, call the senior center at 440-279-2167.

Register ASAP to attend one or more Elderberries programs – all complete with free food courtesy of the Geauga County Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center.

Fall Wagon Ride on Oct. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation;Restoring Parks for Wildlife on Nov. 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center; and Wildlife Detective Training on Dec. 8 from 1-2:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.
