America 250 in Your Parks

Geauga Park District is celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary with a variety of free programs inspired by America 250-Ohio, the statewide commemoration of the nation’s semiquincentennial, and Ohio Goes to the Movies. a signature America 250-Ohio initiative celebrating the Buckeye State’s rich film history.

Among featured programs is American History in the Sky on July 10, from 7-8 p.m. at Observatory Park’s Robert McCullough Science Center. Explore America’s history through 10 astronomy-related stories and discoveries, followed by night sky viewing, weather permitting.

Then, on July 13, Frohring Meadows will be the place to be for Monday FUN-Day: Big Games in the Park from 6-8 p.m. Visitors are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy giant outdoor games such as Jenga, Connect Four, yard dice, dominoes and more.

Additional America 250-themed events include 250 Years of Eagles & Turkeys on Aug. 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center; exhibits and daily Monarch butterfly programs and tagging demonstrations during The Great Geauga County Fair, Sept. 3-7; and Family Night Campfire & Fun on Sept. 22 from 6-8 p.m. Registration is required only for Family Night Campfire & Fun.

As part of Ohio Goes to the Movies, Observatory Park will host a free outdoor screening of “Superman” on July 11. Pre-show activities begin at 6 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m. on a giant LED screen. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, snacks, water and bug repellent.

The celebration also extends to the park district’s Nights Out in the Parks concert series, featuring American music. Performances are scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. at Big Creek Park’s Donald W. Meyer Center and include Bent String Band on July 25 and Big North Band on Aug. 8. Concerts move indoors in case of inclement weather.
