The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has awarded Geauga Park District a $75,000 Paddling Enhancement Grant to be used toward improvements to Eldon Russell Park in Troy Township.

“I thank Director Mary Mertz for granting Geauga County with the funding for this project,” state Rep. Diane Grendell (R-Chester Township) said. “It has been very important that we have kept our parks open.”

Grendell noted Geauga’s parks have never been used more than this year.

“Even last Sunday (Oct. 18) on a day that was very cold and wet, our parks were full. Children and families were out walking, exercising and enjoying each other’s company,” she added. “I do not know what could be better than that to help the people of my district.”

The Paddling Enhancement Grant is a competitive grant program offering 100% reimbursement to eligible political subdivisions such as municipalities, townships, counties, joint recreational districts, park districts, conservancy districts, along with state and federal agencies.

Its purpose is to improve or develop recreational boating access for hand-powered watercraft at public facilities.

“Thank you to park planner Anne Lynch, whose exceptional job ensured securement of this grant,” Grendell said.

The grant was provided by ODNR’s Division of Parks and Watercraft for FY 2021.
