Going “Batty” at Scenic River
Munsonite Jacob Hamblen, of Boy Scout Troop 91, will build and place two bat houses at the Scenic River Retreat on Mayfield Road. This will be his project to earn the highly prized Eagle Scout badge.
Jacob’s project will make the park a little free of mosquitoes, as bats are insect killers. Jacob said he will return each year to check the houses for wasp nests, as wasps deter bats from using them. Thank you, Jacob.

Historic Tidbit
Memorial Day began in Petersburg, Va., when Mary Logan, wife of Union Commander John A. Loban, saw young girls placing flowers on graves of soldiers at Blandfield Church on April 26, 1865. Mrs. Logan asked her husband to request authorities to proclaim the date as “Decoration Day,” which he did. It was subsequently declared a national holiday with the name changed to Memorial Day and is observed the last Monday in May.
Fly the beautiful flag at half-mast until noon on May 27 and give silent thanks to those who have given their lives to ensure our freedom.
