Register For Senior Trash Pickup Days

Local township and village road crews will again work with the Geauga County Department on Aging employees and volunteers to remove unwanted items from seniors’ garages, outbuildings and driveways during locally scheduled pickups.

Local road crews and department on aging staff cannot enter homes. Items should be placed outside the night before the pickup. Do not leave items curb side.

Seniors ages 60 and older who wish to receive trash pickup assistance must first register with the department on aging by the cutoff date or earlier.

Trash pickup days are:

Thompson Township: May 19. Sign up by May 11.

Chardon Township: May 30 and 31. Sign up by May 23.

Auburn Township: June 1 and 2. Sign up by May 25.

Huntsburg Township: June 1 and 2. Sign up by May 25.

Newbury Township: June 5, 6 and 7. Sign up by May 26.

For specific allowable community guidelines or to register for the pickup, call 440-279-2130. Please have a list of items needing removal.

Young of Heart 

May 19, 11:30 a.m.

Geauga Young of Heart will meet at St. Anselm Church in Chester Township. Bring a brown bag lunch. Snacks and beverage are provided. Dan Karl will entertain the group with his keyboard, guitar and vocals.

A trip is planned to Niagara Falls, N.Y., Aug. 15-16 to the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino to see Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff. Also included is the Niagara Power Project, the Made in America Store and a winery. Cost is $255, or $261 for nonmembers.

Technology & Resource Fair

May 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Geauga County Department on Aging is hosting a technology and resource fair at West Geauga Senior Center, 8090 Cedar Road, Chester Township.

There will be hands-on education and how to use smart phones, apps, Bluetooth connectivity and more. Try a virtual experience where technology and medicine integrate.

The free event includes speaker series, vendor tables, individualized technology help and lunch. Call 440-279-2163 to register.

Volunteers Needed to Deliver Meals

The Geauga County Department on Aging is in need of Home Delivered Meal (HDM) drivers for the Middlefield and Parkman areas on Thursdays.

The meal routes start at the Middlefield Senior Center, 15820 Ridgewood Road in Middlefield.

The HDM program delivers warm, nutritious lunches between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, to homebound seniors in the community.

The department on aging is looking for area agencies, organizations, church groups and individuals 18 years old or older, with a valid driver’s license, who are interested in volunteering for the program. Training includes filing department on aging HDM volunteer paperwork and a short orientation about the program. Volunteers can deliver meals on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed/substitute basis.
