With Sympathy
Heartfelt sympathy goes to family and friends of Bettie Jane Scheele, a longtime Munson resident who passed away Jan. 13 at the age of 90. Mrs. Scheele, wife of the late Ralph Scheele, worked for 27 years as school secretary at Munson Elementary School.
Contributions in Bettie’s memory may be sent to Munson Elementary School, 12687 Bass Lake Road, Chardon, 44024.
Park Board Members Needed
Munson Township is seeking volunteers to serve on the Park & Recreation Board. The board oversees the maintenance and improvements to the township’s parks as well as planning and coordinating a number of community minded events throughout the year.

Kindergarten Sign-Ups
To be eligible to attend Munson Elementary School kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2013. A kindergarten information night for parents will be held Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chardon Middle School, Large Group Instruction Room, 424 North St., Chardon.
Munson Elementary School kindergarten registration will be held at the school, 12687 Bass Lake Road, on Feb. 12 from 8-11 a.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. and Feb. 20 from 4:30-8 p.m. Only a parent or legal guardian may register a child. Appointments are necessary.

Leadership Geauga Scholarship
Leadership Geauga County will provide a scholarship to at least one sophomore at each Geauga County high school to attend the 2013 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminars at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, May 31 to June 2. The three-day seminar gives sophomores an opportunity to interact with leaders in business, education, government and volunteerism as well as meet students from other areas and discuss topics that affect them.
All high schools in Geauga County have been invited to send a student to represent their school.

Geauga County Dog Shelter
The Geauga County Dog Shelter, 12513 Merritt Road, Munson, is always in need of donations of food, bedding, water bowls, collars, leashes, treats and toys for its temporary canine residents waiting for their permanent homes. Volunteers are needed to walk and comfort them.
The dog shelter is not funded by tax dollars but rather self-supportive from the general fund and money brought in from dog licenses, adoption fees and donations.

Award-winning silk painting artist Gunter Schwegler will have his work displayed at the annual Orchid Mania show at Cleveland Botanical Gardens Feb. 5 through March 10. He will also be teaching a silk painting workshop there March 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To register, call 216-707-2845.
Tri-County Coin Club
The Tri-County Coin Club will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at St. Luke Episcopal Church 11519 Wilson Mills Road, Munson. Following a short business meeting, there will be a 50-plus-lot coin auction, door prizes, coin displays, raffle and 50-50 drawing.

Volunteers Needed
Geauga County Job & Family Services, 12480 Ravenwood Drive, Munson, is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Tutoring Program. The program matches volunteers with area elementary students who need extra help in basic reading and math skills. Volunteers are required to attend training and complete a criminal background check, both provided by GCJFS.

Groundhog Day
Groundhog is the popular name for the woodchuck. Feb. 2 is designated as Groundhog Day when, it is said, the groundhog emerges from hibernation. If he sees his shadow, he returns to his hole for six more weeks of winter hibernation. Let’s hope for a cloudy, rainy day Feb. 2.
