Organization Meetings

GCP Internship Program
Student applications, which are due Feb. 1 for summer 2013 internships at 23 Geauga County businesses, may be obtained at the Geauga Growth Partnership office, 12373 Kinsman Road, Suite 106, Newbury. The internships are available to Geauga County high school juniors and seniors.
Interviews will be held Feb. 23 at the Newbury Business Park.

Child Advocates Needed
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Geauga County, (CASA for Kids), is seeking volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children involved in the juvenile court. Volunteers must be at least 25 years of age and have no criminal record.
The next training session will begin in March with 32 hours of pre-service training provided by CASA staff. Continuing education is provided after appointment by the juvenile court to serve as guardian.

Geauga County NAMI
Geauga County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a peer support group meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services, 13244 Ravenna Road, Munson. Geauga County NAMI provides education, support and advocacy to those affected by mental illness and their families.
Meetings are free and open to the public; registration is not necessary. For more information, call 440-286-6264.
Free Sunday Dinner
A free homemade meal will be served Feb. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Fellowship room of St. Luke Episcopal Church, 11519 Wilson Mills Road, Munson. There will be a choice of soups, breads and desserts.
Donations are not necessary, but appreciated. To help prepare or serve the dinner, or for more information, call 440-285-4641.
Shutterbugs Camera Club
The next meeting of the Shutterbugs Camera Club will be held Feb. 7, from 7-9 p.m., at the Geauga Park District’s West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township. The topic for instruction and discussion will be “Photographing the Homeless.”
Monthly meetings, which include group critiques of photos, are open to all levels and ages of photography enthusiasts. Registration is not required.

With the Genealogical Society
The Geauga County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Bostwick Room of the Chardon Public Library. Guest speaker David Lintern will relate James A. Garfield’s years as the Republican Party’s leading member in the House of Representatives, 1863-1880. Mr. Lintern is an interpreter at Lawnfield, the James A. Garfield home in Mentor.

With the Arts
The Geauga Lyric Theater and Art Center is offering programs designed for school children to explore the arts on school holidays Feb. 15 and 18, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Munson’s Indoor Flea Market
The Munson Township Park & Recreation Board will host an indoor flea market, rain, snow or shine, on Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Munson Township Hall and Fire Station Bay, 12210 Auburn Road. Proceeds benefit the ongoing projects and events coordinated by the Park & Recreation Board.

Historic Tidbit
The Shanower Library at Century Village in Burton was at one time the Munson Township Hall and was also used as a one-room schoolhouse. It was located on Mayfield Road near the intersection of Fowler’s Mill Road and moved to Century Village in 1987.
