Congratulations
Congratulations to John D. Karlovec, editor, and the entire staff of The Geauga County Maple Leaf on the eight well-deserved awards received at the Ohio Newspaper Association convention in Columbus. Of special recognition in the contest for Ohio’s weekly newspapers were awards for first place in covering the tragic shooting at Chardon High School, first place in advertising and an award for its website, which the judges called a “good all-purpose community news site.”
Best wishes to all at the “Leaf” for continued success.

Historic Tidbit
One of the causes of acne in early times was the lack of personal hygiene, which caused facial scarring in women and men. A temporary cover for this was the spreading of melted bee’s wax to smooth the scars. Should the woman or man smile, the hardened wax would crack, thus the term “crack a smile.” If they sat too close to the fireplace, the wax would melt and so the expression “losing face” evolved.
