A grease fire that started in a french fry fryer early Nov. 25 forced the Bainbridge Township McDonald’s to close for a day, police said.

“It burned a little bit of the fryer itself and then extended up the hood to the outside,” said Asst. Fire Chief Wayne Burge Nov. 29, adding there were no injuries and no damage to the building itself, which is located at 17638 Chillicothe Road.

Employees activated the restaurant’s suppression system, which helped crews arrive to a smaller fire, Burge said.
The restaurant was able to reopen the morning of Nov. 26 with approval from the Geauga County Health Department and the Bainbridge Zoning Department, he said.

The restaurant ordered new parts for the affected fryer, Burge said.

“It was pretty well confined, which is very, very lucky,” he said. “The employees did a fantastic job. They did exactly what they were supposed to do and that’s what really minimized the damage, where (McDonald’s was) able to open up a lot sooner.”
