With dumping in the community house trash bins a continuous issue, Troy Township Trustees discussed whether or not to install cameras at their Oct. 1 meeting.

“Do you think it’s time we put cameras up?” asked road contractor Bob Humr, who recently had to remove a couch from the dumpster. “Cameras would catch all the stuff that’s going on out here because this last couch, I mean those guys worked to put that in that dumpster.”

Trustee Len Barcikoski questioned if cameras would stop the dumping or just cause people to leave their trash elsewhere in the township.

“Whenever we talk about tires, we talk about, well, we’d rather have them bring them over here for our tire day and our junk day than have somebody throwing them out on the side of the road. Now, where do we fall in respect to this other junk?” Barcikoski asked. “Do we wanna stop it and possibly transfer it to another place? Or, will we really be stopping it? That’s what we gotta consider before we put in a system to actually catch people doing that.”

Trustee Sharon Simms said she isn’t sure it’s Troy residents doing the dumping, noting the residents like having access to the recycling.

Parkman Road Superintendent Eric Matthews was present at the meeting and was asked about the effectiveness of his township’s cameras and plate reader.

Matthews replied they’d call the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and give them the video footage and the department would issue tickets — three have been issued in the past two weeks.

Deputies have also made people come back and remove their litter from the dumpster, he added.

Matthews told the trustees Parkman got their system via RadioActive Electronics.

Simms offered to reach out to them and get a price.

During the public comment section, resident Dixie Warner voiced her support for the cameras.

“I think it’s an excellent idea. I’d hate to see the recycle bins taken away. I’m a big recycler,” she said. “And, I’d just hate to see that go. I think you need something to show if anybody, especially out-of-towners, are dumping crap in these dumpsters out here.”
