Community Day of Service
Berkshire Elementary students and staff participated in a variety of volunteer activities across Geauga and neighboring counties during the school’s Community Day of Service on May 8.
Second-grade students visited the Chardon and West Geauga senior centers, where they joined seniors for activities including kickboxing, bingo, chair volleyball and planting impatiens for Mother’s Day gifts. The visits provided opportunities for conversation and connection across generations.
Kindergarten, first-, third- and fourth-grade students focused on environmental stewardship and community improvement projects. Kindergartners cleaned areas around the Geauga County Fairgrounds before returning to school for a bag-decorating activity provided by Claridon Community Helps. First-graders picked up garbage, removed sticks from lawn areas and completed beautification projects at Claridon Woodlands before enjoying lunch at the Lodge and team-building activities outdoors.
Third-grade students visited Holden Arboretum for gardening and woodworking activities, followed by time exploring the trails and grounds. Fourth-grade students worked at Beaumont Reservation in Rock Creek, cleaning trails and gardening before participating in team-building activities, including human foosball and the low-ropes course.
The annual event provided students with opportunities to serve their communities while learning the value of teamwork, stewardship and civic engagement.
Badger Lab Celebrates Successes
Students and staff in the Badger Lab Vocational Program recently celebrated a successful school year with a picnic at Claridon Woodlands on May 19.
Berkshire’s Badger Lab provides students of all ability levels with community-based, hands-on learning experiences that promote independence, life skills and workforce readiness. The program helps students transition into employment and meet the expectations of adult life.
The year-end celebration recognized student achievements and milestones. Awards including the “Master of Detail” and “Joy and Resilience Award” were presented to deserving students.
The program’s success is supported by collaboration among staff, administrators, local employers and parents, all working together to help students build the skills and confidence needed for success after graduation.
